BLOEM | Floristry Studio | Ontario

Discover Bloem, a floral studio created by Susannah van der Zaag, celebrates the beauty of nature and flowers. Based in Ontario, their uniqueness comes from growing their own specialty cut flowers that are carefully grown, curated and collected on their quarter acre farm. Bloem's work focuses on styling + editorial, brand activation, and weddings & events.
We talk to Susannah to find out all about her passion for flowers and advice for beginner florists looking to start their own businesses.

1. How were you introduced to the world of flowers?

I’m from a farming family, and have always loved working outside with my hands, but my degree is in sculpture and photography. I remember for years trying to figure out how I could possibly merge outdoor work and living in the country with something that incorporates design. This was in 2016 when Floret’s viral photo of her dahlias in the back of her white pick up truck went viral, and I spent an entire winter researching flower farming. I started growing flowers the next spring in 2017.

2. Why do you love working with flowers?

I love the constantly changing flower seasons, and leaning into the ephemera of the material. I try to not make the same thing twice, and the possibility to do that is there with flowers.

3. What is the best advice you have received through your floral arrangement studies?

Don’t take on work that doesn’t align with your vision!

4. How did you manage to turn your passion into a business?

By doing the math, setting boundaries and protocols, and sticking to them. Building a network of florists/farmers that you can ask questions to and troubleshoot problems or price points with is also so valuable!

5. Are there any artists who you look up to or inspire you most?

Carlota Guerrero and her work with Rosalia and Solange is so inspiring to me. It’s so powerful and soft at the same time. I also adore Passionflower Sue and her abstract approach to florals.

6. Where do you source your floral materials, vases & tools?

I love Camilia Supply for vases & tools, based in BC, Canada. The Local Flower Collective is my go to for Ontario grown flowers and the best fruit! I’m also producing some of my own wonky ceramics for events, and I’m excited about producing as much as possible in house, including the flowers.

7. How would you describe your style of floral art?

I call it experiments in nature, and it’s been called hortisculpture before. I love finding a balance between sculptural and wild, and giving myself the space to grow and change and try new things.

8. Do you have a favourite material or season?

I’m an Iris and Lily gal, so June and July are good to me.

9. What is the advice you would give to someone who is studying or wanting to study floral arrangement?

Let the flowers take you where they want to go.

10. Do you have any good floristry secrets / tips to share?

I tie my bridal bouquets off with an elastic band. It’s the best. It’s secure enough to keep things together, but flexible enough to allow you to adjust your stems to perfection.

11. What is ahead in your flower future?

Growing less annuals, more perennials. I’m also looking to grow more veggies and incorporate them into my work.

12. For flower lovers - where would you recommend they visit in a 24 hour visit near your city?

The Toronto Flower Market is 100% Ontario grown flowers, and is the second Saturday of every month from May - October. I also love walking through Little Portugal in the summer - the front yard gardens are so magical.
