Florada | Conscious Floristry | Sydney

Florada, created in 2020, is a Sydney-based florist that epitomises conscious floristry. Founder Dhani D’Arcy’s unwavering dedication to seasonal, Australian-grown flowers is a refreshing departure from the environmentally damaging norms. Florada opts for a conscious floristry approach that supports local economies and rejects carbon-heavy floral imports. Offering a range of services, from eco-friendly wedding designs to educational workshops, Florada is a vibrant bloom in Sydney’s sustainable floristry landscape.

1. How were you introduced to the world of flowers?

I’ve been quietly obsessed with flowers since I was small, they have always held a lot of memory for me. I’ve always been creative, initially drawing and painting flowers in my younger years, then I studied jewelery design (with flowers being a common theme in my work) and now I’m a florist!

2. Why do you love working with flowers?

Flowers are obviously a beautiful medium to work with, but what I love most is the ability to create things of beauty over and over, with endless possibilities, and the joy it brings to others in doing so.

3. How did you manage to turn your passion into a business?

It was more about finding an opportunity to work for myself, I have always wanted to run my own business and to create impact. Floristry was the thing I saw that had the greatest potential for making that happen.

4. What is the advice you would give to someone who is studying or wanting to study floral arrangement?

Attending a flower workshop to start with or going to the flower markets and picking up some flowers to play with at home is a good way to start. Formal training isn’t necessarily required, floristry is something you can teach yourself through practice, there are a lot of inspiring florists you can learn from online.

5. What is ahead in your flower future?

My hope is that Florada continues to be recognised as the leading low-waste florist in Sydney, and and across Australia, and that more people start to understand the benefits of supporting local growers, as well as florists who operate more sustainably.

6. Tell us more about what it means to you to be a ‘conscious florist’

Conscious Floristry is a term used by Florada, in place of buzzwords like ‘sustainable’ or ‘ethical’ to describe our approach to floristry, which is guided by the seasons and local availability. We only use Australian grown flowers, we say no to carbon-heavy imports, and we minimise waste with our daily processes and packaging. We are always learning and always improving.
