About the Event
Join Sogetsu Ikebana teacher Sandra Marker for a focused, technique-driven workshop on the elegant Nageire style of Ikebana. This tall vase arrangement style — created without a kenzan — is a hallmark of refined ikebana practice. The goal? To make your flowers appear to float effortlessly, as if magically suspended in air.
This hands-on session is ideal for beginners, current students, and experienced ikebanists alike. Whether you’re learning Nageire for the first time or revisiting it to refresh foundational skills, this is a must-attend masterclass.

Materials to Prepare
Vessel:
-
Tall, narrow vase (no kenzan)
Support Materials (for fixing):
-
Sturdy branches to use inside the vase for structure
-
Floral scissors (hasami)
-
Water bowl
-
Optional: extra twigs or line material
Suggested Floral & Branch Material (from Sandra Marker):
- Please prepare approximately 3-4 long branches (at least twice the height of your vase) and at least 3 stems of flowers.
-
The branches will be the most important element for this workshop. Branch Material suggestions:
-
Prunus varieties: plum, cherry, peach, nectarine, pussy willow, murraya
-
Camellia and maple branches for slanting Nageire styles
-
Choose straight branches free of notches for ease of structure
-
For challenge: try tortured willow or other complex shapes
-
Select branches with a natural curve and character
-
For advanced students, flowers can also be used as the branches eg: Arum lilies, Hydrangeas — though stems are tricky, they open creative possibilities
