“Sandy has been my teacher for over 10 years, first in Sydney and now online. I went to my first class not thinking I had any creative skills, and she guided me through my first arrangement and gave me full confidence to continue. Now, I am an ikebana teacher and run workshops all around the world, all thanks to Sandy.”

FAQs

What should I expect in my first ikebana class?

For your first class we will go through a basic arrangement following the instructions from the textbook step by step in order to complete your first arrangement, and make something beautiful, without any stress!

Do I need to prepare anything before my first ikebana class?

If you are visiting the Sydney studio, you don’t need to prepare anything in advance for your trial lesson. All the materials and tools will be provided, simply bring yourself and your phone or camera to take some photos of your work.

For online classes, you will need to prepare some flower scissors, branches, flowers and vase. We will send you the information on what you need to prepare for your first class.

What type of ikebana will I learn?

Sandy teaches Sogetsu Ikebana. Sogetsu is one of the most popular styles of Ikebana in Japan and around the world. The mantra of the school is “Anytime, anywhere, by anyone,” and it approaches ikebana with a creative and modern style.

How do the online classes work?

The online classes will follow the Sogetsu textbooks, so with each class you will complete one textbook arrangement. You will be provided a login to our online learning portal where you can keep track of your lesson notes and arrangements you have made to date. Before your class you will have the information you need about your next class, to gather the materials (flowers, branches, vase etc) to complete your arrangement. During class, you can ask your teacher any questions about techniques, and your teacher will guide you through your arrangement and provide feedback.

How can I become an ikebana teacher?

In Sogetsu Ikebana, there are 5 textbooks to complete in order to become a teacher. Each textbook has approximately 20 classes and takes approximately 6 months to complete. Once you have completed each textbook you can apply for certificates through your teacher from the Sogetsu Headquarters in Japan. Upon completing all 5 textbooks you can qualify as a Sogetsu Ikebana teacher.

“My love for ikebana is fuelled from the splendour of nature. Nothing is stagnant, the ephemeral character of the plant material continues to display beauty over time, allowing us a way to embrace a journey of nature attaining calmness and serenity in the joy of creating arrangements”.
