Rae Blooms | Florist | Amsterdam

Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, Rae Blooms, a playful flower studio founded and run by Ariella Hill, offers a unique and artistic approach to floral arrangements.

Originally from Byron, Australia, Ariella has cultivated a deep connection to flowers, viewing them as a form of art that allows her to explore and grow as an artist. In this Q&A, Ariella shares her journey, inspirations, and valuable advice, giving us a glimpse into the captivating world of Rae.

1. How were you introduced to the world of flowers?

My first ever introduction to the flower world was in Istanbul. It was where I decided back in 2012 that I wanted to be a florist. Walking around the flower fields realising it was flowers that were making me feel at ease.

2. Why do you love working with flowers?

It’s the ever changing seasonal palette, their impermanence and knowing its all mother nature.

3. What is the best advice you have received through your floral arrangement studies?

To allow the flowers to sit where they want to. Move with the arrangement rather than getting stuck on your original idea.

4. How did you manage to turn your passion into a business?

I’ve been working as a florist for over 10 years now. It took time learning from others, understanding what I like and then starting from the bottom. Word of mouth. I just started making.

5. Are there any artists who you look up to or inspire you the most?

The list is long but to know a few: Ruby Mary LennoxLoose Leaf and Hamish Powell.

6. Where do you source your materials, vases & tools?

I feel really lucky to live in the heart of the flower world.

7. How would you describe your style of floral art?

A little funky. A little playful.

8. Do you have a favorite material or season?

Not really. I love that they constantly change. Working with new ingredients each season. I will forever love orchids though. Obviously.

9. What advice would you give to someone studying or wanting to study floral arrangement?

Just that it takes time. Give yourself the space. It’s not always going to always look exactly the way you want when you’re still learning but it will happen and when it does it’s really rewarding.

10. Do you have any good floristry secrets or tips to share?

Practically I don’t have secrets but I guess a tip would be to just try to focus on your own work and making something that feels true to you.

11. What lies ahead in your flower future?

A lot more of the same hopefully. I’m so grateful for where I am now. I would love to work with new artists pushing myself and my creativity.

12. For flower lovers – where would you recommend they visit in Amsterdam during a 24-hour visit?

I think the Gardens of the West are pretty cute. It’s a little out of the city but a nice way to spend an afternoon. De Kas is a sweet little restaurant for plant lovers. There is also a very nice Plant and Flower market on Kerkstraat; it’s only open on Mondays but worth a visit! And finally an early morning tour of the Flower market in Aalsmeer is the largest flower market in the world, you have to catch a bus out there but if you are crazy about the flower world it’s definitely an eye opening experience.
